Brief description
These apprenticeships would suit school-leavers who like working with their hands, being a problem solver, using technical skills, Knowledge and diagnostic equipment. The training will give the individuals a foothold into furthering a career with SFS as a qualified technician.

Purpose of the role
To be trained in all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repairs on HGV and light commercial vehicles. To gain experience by supporting and following instruction from the senior members of the workshop staff. To attend training collage as required and any other training courses required to obtain the required pass marks to obtain a recognised qualification in vehicle repairs to be able to inspect, maintain and repair all vehicles on fleet, including municipal vehicles, in order to ensure roadworthiness and compliance in line with all relevant legislation and Company standards to maximise fleet availability and thereby maximise fleet utilisation and maintain customer satisfaction to the highest level.

Duties and responsibilities
Effect Vehicle Repairs
  • To assist and carry out vehicle inspection examinations in line with VOSA procedure and Company policy
  • To assist in the test and check systems and components are safe, secure and working properly
  • To assist in diagnose faults by isolating systems or components that may have caused or potentially cause a problem
  • To assist in repair or replace worn parts ahead of the vehicle’s breakdown or damage
  • To assist in ensuring authorisation is obtained to repair or fit parts in line with Company Procedure
  • To assist in effectively and efficiently use various specialist equipment, including hand-held and onboard compression gauges and diagnostic computer
  • To assist where supervised in the safely and effectively use power tools, machine tools and equipment as and when required and safe to do so, for the task for which it was designed and return to correct place of storage after use
  • To assist where supervised in the use common hand tools including screwdrivers, wrenches, and pliers, to work on small-scale parts
Health and Safety
  • To ensure take steps to safeguard own and others’ Health and Safety by ensuring operate safe working practices, in line with appropriate Method Statements and Risk Assessments and utilisation of all PPE provided
  • To promptly report, and where possible, deal with any hazards that arise
  • To ensure maintain clean and tidy working area, including workshop, walkways and vehicles
  • To complete jobs in full before the end of the shift or carry out job handover as required ensuring the vehicle is left in a safe condition with necessary safety signage present
General duties
  • To adhere to Company Policies and Procedures and uphold Company Core Values, focusing on Customer Care with a professional approach to customers, suppliers and colleagues
  • To protect and secure vehicles, buildings and property by following Company procedures
  • To accommodate any other reasonable tasks that may be allocated to work effectively as part of a team to achieve the business objectives and maximise customer satisfaction, thereby also gaining repeat business wherever possible, maximising utilisation rates and profit levels

About You

Skills
Essential Skills
  • Ability to learn about commercial vehicle maintenance and servicing
  • Ability to learn about municipal vehicle maintenance and servicing
  • Ability to learn about knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to learn how to use diagnostic tooling and problem solving
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals
  • Computer literate
Desirable Skills
  • To have good reading skills
  • To have clear and legible hand righting
  • To have a good level of numeracy 
Qualifications and experience
Must be looking to complete NVQ 3 in Heavy Vehicle Mechanics. Can either be in 1st or 2nd year of Vehicle Apprenticeship already.

Working hours
40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, typically 8.00am to 5.00pm (one hour for lunch).
