MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

You will oversee all operational activities of the business, ensuring vehicles are managed and maintained aligned to contractual and regulatory requirements. You will support customer delivery via implementing strategies to optimise fleet performance, whilst working to minimise the environmental impacts. As Fleet Director you will sponsor a health and safety culture, ensuring adherence to company policies and regulatory requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • As part of the senior leadership team work to develop and initiate strategic plans for the business. Developing and implement fleet management strategies and policies to ensure the smooth operation of the company's fleet department.
  • Oversee and coordinate the maintenance and repair of vehicles, equipment and machinery to ensure minimise customer downtime. Ensuring all vehicles are maintained to the highest standards.
  • Manage and monitor maintenance costs, evaluation versus vehicle budgets, and identify areas of improvement and implement cost saving measures.
  • Provide management and guidance to the technical maintenance manager to ensure the Fleet Desk operates professional and pro-actively to support customers whilst properly interrogating maintenance to ensure the business is only authorising work it is responsible for and that all manufacturer warranties and relationships are maximised.
  • Manage the operational contract managers in ensuring customer contractual requirements are delivered, thus ensuring that all workshops, workshop employees and mobile engineers operate professionally, to the highest health and safety standards and that all maintenance and repairs are completed to the highest standard.
  • To ensure that all third-party maintenance providers are properly approved and monitored to ensure that all repairs completed on company/customer vehicles are to the highest standard and that the actions of third parties used do not adversely impact on the contracts, reputation and integrity of SFS.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external stakeholders such as suppliers, vendors and regulatory authorities, to resolve disputes, or challenges and to ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards.
  • To work with the senior management team on new business opportunities including checking the specification of vehicles quoted to ensure compliance, identifying robust maintenance solutions for each opportunity and calculating the whole life maintenance budget to be incorporated into the final quotation.
  • To be responsible for the implementation of all operational aspects of new contracts.
  • Stay updated with industry advancements, technological developments and regulatory changes related to the fleet manage. Briefing leadership team and operational managers along with recommending and implementing best practices and innovations.

About You

Essential Skills                                                                             

  • Extensive knowledge of heavy commercial vehicles including the full range of municipal vehicles, for maintenance practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Proven experience in fleet management, with at least 5 years in leadership or a managerial position.
  • In depth experience of all aspects of workshop operation.
  • High level of understanding in health and safety legislation and its application in a workshop environment.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, financial analysis and contract negotiation skills.
  • Ability to accurately price future maintenance budgets for specialist vehicles over periods of up to 10 years.
  • Ability to identify solutions to complex customer operational requirements.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills to interact with internal and external stakeholders effectively.
  • Proven experience of managing teams of people, with strong leadership skills with the ability to effectively manager and motivate a diverse team of fleet professionals.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise both for oneself and as a team manager.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office Suite and fleet management software.
  • Strong understanding of environmental sustainability practices in fleet management.

  • Previous O Licence holder
  • IOSH managing safely qualification or equivalent
